Dogsled Tour Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kind of dogs are they?

A: Alaskan Racing Huskies. These are the same dogs that are used in the Idirod Race. They are mostly cross breeds from Husky and hound dogs. They are very lean athletes with short hair. The short hair is good for our warmer West Coast climate. Don't be surprised at the size of these dogs, they appear small but they can pull more than dogs 2 or 3 times their size.

Q: Can we drive the sled?

A: In most cases yes. You will ride the rails with the musher on the back of the sleigh and learn the commands that control the dogs. When it's icy and fast we do not let our guests drive the sleighs for safety reasons.

Q. Where does the tour take place? Is it run on snow?

The tour takes place at Cougar Mountain base facility, 10 minutes north of Whistler Village. It is run on a special dirt track.

Q. What kind of sled do you use?

A custom made dog sled on wheels holding 2 adult passengers.

Q. How young can you be to participate?

To participate in the summer dog sled program you must be 2 years of age, however to ride in a sleigh you must be 5 years old.

Q. Where do the dogs live?

At a 5-star kennel in Pemberton.

Q. Is it mean to make the dogs run in the summer? Do they get hot?

The dogs love social interaction which is why we started our summer tours. The dogs are much happier to be out of their kennel and around people.
